Dracaena Marginata Propagation, Watering & Pruning

You don’t need to be a professional or to do any special activities to successfully propagate Dracaena Marginata. The process is quite simple and similar to other plants. So let’s get start it.

Before start getting into this, make sure you already have a well-grown Dracaena, with many shoots and leaves on it.

·        Firstly, prepare other containers where you to grow the cuttings. Put some nice and fluffy soil into the containers. Avoid using the compacted, as it possibly results in much slower growth. Also, check the drainage through the soil by watering it. The water needs to reach out to the bottom, in case of tightly compressed soil, it can block the water’s way.

·        Now, took the main plant, and cut off the shoots from its origin. A single shoot can work as a cutting that will grow into a new plant in future. You can use any clean scissors or cutting equipment for this purpose. We recommend you to get a sharp-edge scissors for Dracaena Propagation.

·        Place the cutting for an hour to dry. But before placing it, remove all the leaves from its lower end, as our purpose is propagation.

·        Water the containers to make the soil more drainable and soft. And, then put the cutting into the soil while the rest of part remains outside including leaves.

·        Now, add some more soil at the top and leave the containers for a few weeks. If you’ve followed these steps, then definitely you’ll see some initial results with your cutting (shoot start pushing out from thick stem).

Following these easiest steps, you can do Dracaena Marginata propagation.

Dracaena Marginata watering:

You should only water it when the soil seems to be dry. Similar to many other plants, you can also overwater it. Watering Dracaena Marginata once in every two weeks is recommended by experts, but during the summers, you can do a little extra. Similarly, in winter, it is good to watering dracaena Plant once in every three weeks.

Dracaena Marginata Pruning:

Since these are bright-light plants, so if you keep it in such places where it is less exposed to light, then its stems start becoming thinner. The same goes for over-watering and low-watering situations.

The reason why you should prone your Dracaena Marginata is that it will not grow into further trunks or leaves without pruning. Otherwise, it Can possibly grow up to 10 feet with a single stem.
It’d be better if you prune it once in every two years. But, if you realize the need for pruning, you can cut the shrubs even after a year.

You can prune the Dracaena for any height that you want. But, don’t prune it right to the ground as it leads to the death of your Dracaena Plant. If it grows the bunch together, then prune it from different heights. By doing this, it will grow into a big and nice plant.

Let’s Prune the Dracaena Marginata

·        In case, if your Dracaena Plant has two stems then cut down the first one by 5 feet distance from the soil. Similarly, cut down the other one by 10 feet distance from the soil.

·        If cutting smaller in size, has some follicles at the bottom then clear it down with your hands.

·        Cut down the larger cutting further by three hands from the bottom.

·        After, two or three weeks, the mother plant will start growing shoots. So, make sure you’ve placed it where bright light comes directly over the plant.

·        Now, if you want to propagate those, cutting, then take two separate pots with soil. Put them directly a few inches below the soil. And you’ll see the shoots on the stems after few weeks.

I would suggest you have some pots ready with soil, before propagating or pruning Dracaena Plant.
